Ranthambore National Park is divided into 10 safari zones, and the forest department allots vehicles to a specific zone for each safari β€” you can’t simply drive wherever you like. Understanding what each zone offers helps you request the right one when slots are available.

Zones 1–5: The Core Zone Classics

These zones cover the park’s original, most storied territory β€” dotted with the historic lakes (Padam Talab, Raj Bagh, Malik Talab) and the ruins that surround Ranthambore Fort. Zones 2, 3 and 4 in particular have long been associated with high sighting frequency because of the water bodies within them. Zone 1 and 5 border the fort and offer beautiful scenery even on the safaris where a tiger doesn’t appear.

Zones 6–9: The Quieter Buffer Zones

These zones sit further out and see fewer vehicles per safari, which some travellers actually prefer β€” less vehicle congestion at a sighting, more birdlife, and a wilder feel to the drive. Sighting frequency here can be more variable season to season, but resident tigers do hold territory in these zones and long-staying visitors sometimes have excellent luck here.

Zone 10: The Newest Addition

Opened to spread tourist pressure away from the core zones, Zone 10 covers different terrain with its own resident tigers. It tends to be less crowded and is worth requesting if you’re visiting more than once and want a different experience from the classic zones.

How Zone Allotment Actually Works

Zones are allotted through the online forest department booking system, and allocation is partly random once permits open. We can request a preferred zone on your behalf, but confirmation depends on real-time availability β€” anyone who promises you a guaranteed specific zone months in advance isn’t being fully accurate about how the system works.

Our advice: rather than fixating on one “best” zone, book two safaris across different zones if your schedule allows. It roughly doubles your sighting odds and shows you more of the park’s terrain.

Booking Tip

Permits for popular zones during peak season (Dec–Apr) can sell out weeks ahead. Send us your travel dates as early as possible and we’ll lock in the best available zone-and-slot combination before it’s gone.
