Every safari zone in Ranthambore allows two types of vehicles onto the tracks: the open 6-seater Gypsy (jeep) and the larger 20-seater Canter. Both follow the same routes and are subject to the same forest department rules, but the experience they offer is genuinely different.
Gypsy (Jeep) Safari
A Gypsy seats a maximum of 6 tourists plus a guide and driver. Because the group is small, the vehicle can move more flexibly — pausing longer at a fresh pug mark, repositioning quietly for a better photo angle, or lingering at a waterhole without holding up 19 other people.
- Best for: photographers, couples, small families, anyone who wants a personal, unhurried safari
- Group size: up to 6 guests
- Booking: fills up fast, especially for peak morning slots — book at least 2–3 weeks ahead in season
Canter Safari
The Canter is a larger, open-top bus seating up to 20 people. It’s more affordable per head and easier to book on short notice since more seats are released per zone. The trade-off is less flexibility — the vehicle sticks closer to a fixed pace and can’t manoeuvre as easily in tight spots.
- Best for: groups, college trips, budget travellers, last-minute bookings
- Group size: up to 20 guests
- Booking: generally easier to secure, even a few days in advance
Cost Comparison
Per-person, a Canter seat typically costs noticeably less than a Gypsy seat, since the same permit and gate fee is split across more people. A Gypsy costs more overall but gives you a private vehicle — worth it if you’re travelling with people you actually want to share the experience with, rather than strangers.
Sighting Odds: Does Vehicle Type Matter?
Both vehicle types enter the same zones and follow the same tracks, so the raw odds of encountering a tiger are similar. What differs is the quality of the experience once you do — a Gypsy lets your guide reposition for the shot, while on a Canter you’re one of 20 people trying to see around each other.
If this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip built around wildlife photography, the Gypsy is worth the extra cost. If you’re travelling in a large group on a tighter budget, the Canter still gets you into the same forest.
Our Recommendation
We book both, and we’re honest with every guest about which suits their trip. Send us your group size and budget and we’ll tell you straight which option makes more sense — rather than upselling the pricier one by default.
